Hello Mr. and Mrs. America and all the ships at sea. I'm here at the Boot Hill Bar and Grill in beautiful Vega, Texas where Bob Wills is Still The King. I'm kicking back with a Blue Moon listening to the soulful sounds of San Antonio Rose and Steel Guitar Rag. Danielle, the barrista, a native of Vega, loads the jukebox with quarters and the magic just keeps pouring out. The past two days have taken me through Levelland, Littlefield, Dimmitt, and now Vega. Littlefield is the home of the great and legendary Waylon Jennings and (the equally great and legendary) Medina Community Library's own, Dr. Don Wilson. It is not possible for me to bike through this part of Texas without thinking of the great singer/song writers who hale from this fertile land including Wills, Waylon, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Ponty Bone, Joe Ely, James McMurty, and of course the original Texas rocker Buddy Holly. The past two days I've pedaled keeping cadence with Holly's
Maybe Baby and Ely's
Down on the Drag. For a Texas music fanatic this was pure heaven. I'm interested to know who your favorite Texas singer/song writers and songs are. Comment and let's talk about it.
I thought you'd be in OK by now. Glad to see you are pacing yourself. I like Vega, pretty little place. Take care.

Was wondering if you were in the middle of the big hailstorm north of there. Glad to see you safe a little further south. What is your new ETA for Crazy Horse, I can shift my schedule up to accommodate. I have been enjoying the music and the list of towns from my childhood.

Bryan I currently have 55 miles in the bank. Today is a scheduled rest day but I am riding to take advanatage of the SW winds. By EOB I will be 2 days head of schedule. However I am still keeping to the origin eta to crazy horse. I will use the banked miles if the winds shift, terrain changes, or I find someplace I want to explore. What is the absolute last day that you can adjust your vacaton schedule? I will give you a definite eta to crazy horse before that drop dead date.
DeleteNo drop dead date. I am now bringing my own SAG wagon with Darlene driving me out and back and that buys me some extra riding days to hopefully be able make it up to Regina. She will drive along to save one leg of driving back and forth to MSP.
DeleteGreat!! Welcome to the tour Darlene!!!
DeleteRandy,
ReplyDeleteBack in the 80's as soon as you crossed into Oklahoma, 385 up to Boise City didn't have much road to the right of the white line so be careful. Have to wait to see what tomorrow brings. Texas has always been way ahead of Oklahoma and New Mexico in highways and we have some of the best in the nation, if not the best. If nothing is there, to the right of the white line Post something, and we can search by Satellite if you want a road with 10 feet to the right of the white line. Sure hope they have improved there roads.

Thanks Mark. The shoulders have been great so far. Wide, good surface, and relatively free of debris. I'm used to riding with bad or no shoulders between the library and my house. I will post something if roads become non navigatable. Thanks again for your offer to help.
Deleteonly 4 weeks to go! you are doing great! love the music!!!!!

I will be calling Kinky to let him know that you OMITTED him from your list of "greats." You'll have some explaining to do, Randy. Just sayin'...
